This page provides an overview of some notable projects that I have worked on over my career.
Large-scale Generation and Load Connections
Technical engineer for several large-scale solar, wind and industrial connections within the distribution network. These connections ranged from 4MW to 100MW in size. My involvement in these projects included:
Technical lead for EMT (PSCAD) and RMS (PSS/E) modelling of control system tuning and performance
Quasi-dynamic network modelling to understand constraints and network impacts
Harmonic and power quality assessments
Provided assessment against, and guidance on National Electricity Rules (NER)
Developed Python scripting tools to streamline assessment process
Microgrid and Isolated System Test (MIST) Facility - Control System
Technical lead on the scoping, design, construction and commissioning of diesel generation and hybrid (solar and battery) control system for multi-MW, $6 million generation test facility.
Highlights:
Control system delivered under budget and to scope
Delivered legacy (PLC-based) and future (ComAp) control systems to demonstrate control system transition
Distribution Synchrophasor Trial
Network SME involved in initiation and early delivery of $20 million project to develop, install and trail synchrophasor technology within a distribution network setting.
LV Statcom Deployment
Technical SME leading $2.8 million project to deploy low voltage (LV) statcoms as a tool to manage LV network voltage regulation. Project covered end-to-end stewardship of technology from specification, procurement, delivery and installation of 20 sites, and establishment of lifecycle management processes.
Highlights:
Project delivered under budget and to scope
Developed real-time remote monitoring solution to monitor performance of LV statcoms
Large-scale Automated Hosting Capacity Assessment Tool
Developed hosting capacity assessment algorithm to assess solar PV hosting capacity for entire distribution network at a feeder-level using Monte Carlo simulation, machine learning and big data analytics.
Highlights:
Successfully delivered hosting capacity assessment for circa 5,000 distribution feeders using scalable methodology
PAS55 / ISO55000 Gap Assessment
Lead on ISO55000:2014 gap analysis for major UK distribution utility and developed several tools and documents to streamline the assessment process. Delivered assessment including pathway and recommendations to achieve ISO55000:2014 compliance.
